Geriatric Labrador with laryngeal paralysis

Geriatric Labrador with laryngeal paralysis

Description of the case and protocol for action:

11 year old neutered male Labrador presented to the emergency department with "heat stroke" and severe inspiratory distress.

He was stabilised and a laryngoscopy was performed, showing laryngeal paralysis and secondary soft palate elongation.

Due to the animal's advanced age and other pathologies, it was decided not to operate on the animal and to implant the EoloStent prosthesis.

The prosthesis was implanted compressed with a long atraumatic forceps and fixed to the larynx with a single stitch. The operation time was less than 5 minutes.

A 10-day tapering regimen of oral corticosteroids and dietary recommendations were given.

Result:

The patient recovered from the anaesthesia without difficulty and with normal breathing. He was discharged the same day of the implantation.
